{1 year ago} move in day

Wednesday, November 14, 2012

We moved into our dream home one year ago today! Boy, that went fast! The building process was a little hectic, but so much fun, I could do it all over again {if I didn’t love it here so much, and it didn’t require moving again!}

We had anxiously awaited this day last year for 6 long months!

In celebration of that exciting day, here’s a couple pictures of {one of my favorite rooms} in our home, the kitchen:

I always {thought} I wanted dark cabinets in the kitchen, but once I saw this glazed creamy-white cabinet at the design studio, I fell in love! We ended up doing the island the dark stain and most of the other cabinetry in the house is dark, (other than the boys’ bathrooms and the laundry room). The dark shows dust so fast so I’m so glad we went with the creamy-white in the kitchen! Our cabinets were custom made by the Amish, they do amazing work.

The coffered ceiling above the island adds a little character, our builder designed that for us.

Another thing I love about our kitchen is the hood, that took a lot of planning to get it just right, but I love how the two-tone ties the paint and stain colors together.

I also love our granite, thankfully, because we spent HOURS looking for just the right slabs.

We eat breakfast on the bar stools every morning, so I love the little TV about the pantry door to watch morning news cartoons.

I got this idea from pinterest and love it! Built in paper towel holder in the island:

Another favorite feature of our kitchen is the under cabinet outlet strips, I love that we didn’t have to break up the tile backsplash with outlets.

If you’re building or remodeling a kitchen, don’t forget the extra outlets! We have two on our island and four in our walk-in pantry too, so I store the toaster, coffee maker and microwave in there.

I had dreamed of a farmhouse sink for the kitchen, until I saw the price! Thankfully, the designer talked me into a granite sink and I love it just as much! I’m notorious for throwing dishes in the sink instead of putting them in the dishwasher right away, so the deep sink is perfect to hide them! I LOVE the instant hot water tap, too! And, this is the first time we’ve had a garbage disposal (that’s what the little button is for) and I wonder how we ever lived without it!

IMG_4028

The magnetic message center nook we have in the space between the refrigerator and double wall ovens is not only totes adorbs, its super functional too!

IMG_4026

And last, but certainly not least, I LOVE the vacuum toe kick we have in the island, perfect for quickly sweeping up crumbs!

But, what I love most about this house is the people I share it with!

We’re looking forward to {God willing} many more years together in this house.

If we ever build I will have to come back to this post, you have so many good ideas!

I think you need to do a home tour, I'm dying to see the rest of it!

Finally!!! We get to see some pictures. I know you said you didn't want to seem "braggy" but just remember you & Robb but a lot of hard work into this. I just love all the extras- tv above the pantry, the shelving in pantry for the toaster and microwave. I also love the hardwood from the very last picture. Heck,I just love it all!

I love it, and I am so excited to finally see some pictures! Our house is on the market, now, and once it sells, we will be starting our dream home build, as well. I love to see other people's ideas. I had never seen one of the "crumb sweepers" until recently, and now I have got to have a central dustpan! I think that is just the coolest invention.

I love your two-toned look, and that vent hood is gorgeous! Y'all did a great job!

So beautiful! I'm curious, who was your builder? :)

I can't believe it's been a whole year! We still don't know when we'll start our building process, but I know who to talk to when we do. It looks like you thought of SO many nice little details! That vacuum thing looks awesome! You make we want to start building now. :) Out of curiosity, who was your builder and how did you decide on them? That is where we have to start and I don't know what I should be looking for to decide.

I can't believe it's been a whole year already! We're still not sure when we're going to start our building process, but your tour makes me want to start right now! I can tell you put so much thought into everything. I know who to ask if I need any tips when the time comes. I love all the little details you thought of....especially that vacuum toe kick! LOVE!! Very curious who your builder was and how you decided on them? That's our first step towards building and I'm not sure how to decide! Thanks so much for sharing!

I love all the smart and practical details in your kitchen! Not to mention it is beautiful! And I have to admit, every time I see the light over your dining room table (it is in the background of the first picture) I always love it.

It;s funny you say that your black cabinets show so much dust. I too, have creamy white cabinets in my kitchen and they look great - when they are clean! I can remember it taking me two days, and at least three Mr. Clean magic erasers to clean all of the cabinets. All kids of spills all over them, as well as the normal daily dirt. UG! I would definitely remodel with a medium dark wood - maybe a happy compromise.

Loved this post, Katie! I agree with others, feel free to do other "tours" because we love them!
The coffee/micro/toaster IN the pantry instead of on the counter is genius! Love the toe kick vacuum.

Your kitchen is beautiful!! We are currently building our dream home and the Amish will frame our home! My husband has stood his ground on this and will have it no other way. He said their work is amazing! They built our deck in our old home and it was beautiful! Thanks for sharing all the great pictures and I can't wait to show my husband the vacuum in your island!

You must have done a lot of planning for this well thought out design. It's gorgeous and so practical. We just moved into a brand new build, but I didn't think of any of the little extras that you did. Your kitchen makes me want to build another house in a couple years!

Love all the details - especially the appliances in the pantry. Great idea!
I'm with the other commenters who would love to see the rest of the house, and also to know how you chose a builder. Thanks :)

cool kitchen...love the paper towel holder on the island...wondering how I can modify mine (I know it can be done but I am not DIY person when it comes to the house and neither is my hubby). I know what you mean about the people..it is the people that make a house a home :)

This is gorgeous. I'm saving a link to this for whenever we redo our kitchen! It has some great ideas.

Gorgeous kitchen!! I hate how you let other's comments bother you. You two worked hard and built your dream home. We close in about two months on our dream home and I refuse to hear any negativity because we worked our tushes off paying off all debt and saving. We don't plan to ever move and we are making it the exact way we want it.

Love it! Especially the vent hood and your granite counter tops. We have similar counter tops so I was wondering if you remember the name of your tile backsplash as well as where you got it? I've had the hardest time trying to find something that will go with the granite as well as my painted cabinets and you nailed it! :)
